Chicago is one of the great American cities with a flavor (and a pizza) all of its own. It’s a rich, comfortable, diligent aroma as deeply rooted as the mozzarella baked into a stuffed pizza (which you need to try when you are there—one can feed a family of five by the way). Moving into the city is a trial unfortunately, often requiring an experienced Chicago moving company, but once you are there getting around becomes decidedly easy and efficient if you only learn how.
One thing to know off the start is that cabs are expensive. Even for short jumps it costs money just to get on and cabbies are notoriously reluctant to give change. Make sure you let them know what tip they are getting, and make sure you tip them because those guys work pretty hard too.
Chicago CTA is probably a better option, even for visiting. There are pay as you go cards, month passes, and 1 or 3 day passes available online (after a few day’s wait) and also in many train spots and other CTA locations. Passes are thin plastic cards that go into a slot on the top of the bus’ payment box and then are immediately objected back up (put them in the right way). Thicker cards must be flashed against a scanner, and change goes into slots on the far right.
The same systems are also present in the train areas, behind the turners, but cost slightly more per ride. Both trains and (especially busses) are clean and quite usually on time, making public transport easy, fast, cheap, and more importantly, removing the need for you to find parking for your car—something that is most assuredly not worth the cost for any downtown dweller.
